Oglala Sioux Fully Beaded Doctor's Bag by Y. Cloud
This is an outstanding fully beaded antique medicine doctor’s bag from Oglala Sioux Native American Indian, Todd Yellow Cloud. Todd Yellow Cloud was a teacher in Arlee, Montana. The piece shows beadwork on all sides being truly fully beaded with beads across the sides, corners and across the bottom. Some of his fine beadwork can be seen in the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) where he was mentioned as being “Todd Yellow Cloud Augusta” and Oglala Lakota Sioux (Oglala Lak?óta). The piece appears to be from the mid-to-late 20th Century and is truly a work of art showing all glass trade beads in a traditional geometric pattern done on Indian tanned hide with red trade clothe wool on top of the genuine steer hide leather antique doctor’s bag. The doctor’s bag most likely dates to the early 1900’s. Provenance: The piece comes from a private collection from outside Glacier National Park in Montana and was likely purchased directly from the Yellow Cloud estate, located within an hour of the collector. The beadwork, which extends to all sides including the bottom, shows a greasy blue background with geometric pattern in greasy yellow, red white hearts, sky blue, cobalt, and chalk white. Each corner of the bag shows hide fringe with rolled tin jingle cones and fancy cut red trade clothe. Near the handle shows red trade clothe with brass furniture tacks and a fancy wound glass pony beaded design. The piece has an original vintage tag with a price of $3,800.00.
