1898-In 1866, Donald J. Mozart and Samuel Rice conceived the New York Watch Company in Providence, Rhode Island, which later became the Hampden Watch Company in 1877. At the height of production, the company assembled 600 watches a day, retained 1000 employees, and possessed net assets of $2,600,000. Their watches are well known for their 14k gold construction and 15 jewel movements. Notably, Hampden was the first company to introduce a size 16, 23 jewel movement to the United States market. This particular watch, serial number 1219195, was produced in 1898 and is a Series I / size 6 in a 14k gold hunter case featuring very fine floral and bird designs on both faces. The rear cuvet is marked "C.W. MF`G Co./ 14K/ US Assay/ 850727". Stem wind, lever set. The dial is white, single-sunk, and bears two faint hairline cracks. The hour chapter ring bears black roman numerals. The seconds dial is marked in 10 second intervals, and the hour hand is a blued moon style, the minute is a light spade, and second hand is a blued triangle. The 15-jewel mechanism is inscribed with the serial number, also "Safety Pinion/ Hampden/ Canton, O." and still runs beautifully. This lot also includes a gorgeous yellow gold filled 25" long, 0.32 troy ounce gold chain with a 10.5mm x 8.25mm fleur-de-lis chain slide set with 1 opal and 6 tiny pearls. HKA#64339
