This 17” tall, by 10.5” wide lantern was likely used at the head of a steam engine. The bottom bears four holes through which it could be mounted to the train, and the bail is too short and small for handheld use. The tall globe inside is intact and unmarked. The large burner and reservoir are marked “CLIMAX/ PAT JAN 21 90/ MADE IN U.S.A.”. The lantern is painted black on all sides except for the glass front and the two white panels on either side of the door, which are marked “2”. The white panels are also each marked “N.G.R.R.” which may indicate that this lantern was once affixed to the Number 2 engine of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. The Number 2 was nicknamed the “Nevada”. The NCGRR was chartered 4 April 1874 and construction was completed 24 March 1876 [Ref: Poor’s Manual of Railroads 1894, p. 268]. The railroad closed in 1942. A nearly identical piece is in the Nevada City Museum.. - Jacobitz Collection -60252
