This Silver City & Gold Hill Billhead Collection consists of 17 items, including Silver Hill Mining Co., Lawson McTigue Wines and Liquors (from Silver City). From Gold Hill: Issued to the Savage Mining Co., T.H. Smith & Co., D.S. Gallatin, Eugene Bittner & Co., Mercer & Tucker, Pioneer Boiler Works, Gold Hill Foundry & Machine Shop, L.B. Frankel & Fulton Foundry. This collection covers a productive era for these two communities. It shows that the towns of Silver City and Gold Hill were both active for merchants working in a variety of industries. Savage mine was named after Leonard Savage who was involved in a lawsuit with Joseph Stone over a verbal agreement to purchase land for $3000. According to Sam Davis, “The Savage Mine was one of the great Comstock mines” [Ref: Sam Davis, The History of Nevada, 1984, p. 282]. -61306
