Navajo Transitional Spider Woman Crosses Blanket
The lot features a late-19th century Navajo Transitional large men’s serape blanket with stunning Spider Woman Crosses. The rug shows a soft natural spun wool with large size showing a stepped zig-zag pattern in red, brown, greys, and natural white with three Spider Woman Crosses at the center. You can see various lazy lines and wonderful variation in the wools coloring. This is one of the larger transitional men’s serapes we have offered. The blanket is well preserved condition with some small staining that could easily be cleaned, no apparent or obvious color bleeding and no major damages, there is typical wear and a small repair in a corner. Interestingly the blanket shows a few lines with red or grey in the white field, an early indicator of the weaver using what yarn they had available. The measurements of this blanket is 80" x 57 1/2". Provenance: From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses.
