Navajo R.H. Begay Sterling Silver Storyteller Belt
Included in this lot is a signed Roland Hogan Begay Navajo Native American sterling silver storyteller belt. R.H. Begay is an award-winning Navajo silversmith who was born on a Native American Reservation near Gallup, New Mexico. He began producing his own signature designs in 1974 after learning silversmithing from his father. Inspired by traditional Native American motifs from Navajo life, his unique jewelry designs are known as "storyteller jewelry." He uses an overlay technique to create scenes, cutting out shapes with painstaking precision, and soldering them to an oxidized silver or gold background. This belt features 14 unique Conchos depicting life on a farm. The belt buckle shows the farmer driving his carriage with a horse. The remaining Conchos feature different live stock and grains as well as some farm equipment. The belt buckle and the fifth concho are signed by the artist R.H. Begay and the buckle is stamped sterling. The belt measures 34” long and the Conchos measure 1 ½” x ½”.
