Featured in this lot is this Northwest Coast Salish polychrome Mahchka or bear mask circa 1940's. The mask features a wonderfully and professionally crafted cedar and polychrome painted construction that shows two round abalone shells inlay for the eyes. The mask represents qualities like strength, family, and health. A specific name for a mask is often tied to a family's history and ceremonial rights, which are considered treasured privileges. The mask shows a wonderfully textured decoration with blue around the eyes and red around the lips and nose with the teeth painted an off white to pop from the mask. The lip of the mask is lined with white rabbit die that lines the entirety of the mask. The condition of this ceremonial mask is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage with some aging to the wood but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this mask is 7" x 6 3/4" x 11 1/4". The collective weight of this ceremonial mask is 2lb 12oz.
