Lot of 2. 1). Panorama of the mining camp from up the hill. Tents and a few early automobiles dot the sagebrush in the otherwise empty valley 30 miles east of Beatty. 2). A panorama of the miners (some pictured with family) hired by George Wingfield to work the Shoshone Mountain mining camp. The camp was organized in 1928 "when two prospectors Mcrae and Lefler rediscovered silver in the old Hornsilver Mine" [Ref: Carlson, Nevada Place Names, 1974, p. 240]. The camp was south of the mine (which is not pictured in either of the panoramas). The Hornsilver was so named because of the rich hornsilver ore found here [Ref: Carlson, Nevada Place Names, 1974, p. 136]. Each 30.5" x 8" and are currently rolled. Photographer was N.E. (Ned) Johnson from Beatty, NV. Johnson was known to have doucmented the mining booms in a number of Nevada and California towns and camps including Bodie, Bullfrog, Rhyolite, and Rawhide. He was active between 1902 and 1931. New prints of Johnson's photographs have been made available. These two panoramas are original prints from the 1920s.
