Lot of 8 Wells Fargo/Pony Express stamps. 1. 143L2 green 4 dollar cancelled stamp. Vignette of Pony Express rider and horse with partial "…NY EXPR…" blue cancellation stamp across face, c. 1861. 2) 143L5 black 4 dollar U/C stamp. Vignette of pony rider. 3) 143L4 green not cancelU/Cstamp. Vignette of pony rider. 4) Same as for 3. 5) 143L1 red 2 dollar cancelled stamp. Vignette of pony rider. 6) 143L2 green U/C 4 dollar stamp. Vignette of pony rider. 7) 143L3 red 1 dollar cancelled stamp. 8) 143L4 green cancelled 2 dollar cancelled stamp. These stamps went on dleiveries and letters that connected mining towns throughout the west during 1861. Communities and camps included Unionville, Virginia City, Aurora, Gold Hill, and Carson City. The legendary Pony Express operated the northern mail route during this time. Wells Fargo, also imprinted at the bottom of the stamps, purchased the express company hoping to continue and expand the lucrative venture. When the transcontinental railroad was completed a few short years later, the mail routes became somehwhat obsolete.

Tightly trimmed, back adhesive present, no holes, has been cut from envelope, piece of envelope present
Top Row #2:
Tight trim on bottom, unused, some paper residue, in light pencil BL
Top Row #3:
Unused and some gum on reverse
Top Row #4:
2 hinges reversed, lower right crenellation, lower left missing, brown stains on obverse.
Bottom Row #1:
Unused appearance, minor hinge residue on reverse
Bottom Row #2:
2 small tears at right edge repaired & remnant hinge on reverse
Bottom Row #3:
Remnant 2 stamp hinges on reverse, lower right wear, dirt on obverse and trim at upper left at the border
Bottom Row #4:
Red spotted center, small curl into upper right corner, some adhesive, small creases lower right corner, cut from being cut out from the sheet
