Cosmopolitan/ Saloon/ Caliente, Nev.// GF/ A/ Drink/ or/ Cigar. R500. The area was called "Culverwell," after being purchased in 1874 by Charles and William Culverwell. A dispute later arose between E.H. Harriman of the Oregon Short Line and Union Pacific and the newly formed San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, owned by Senator William Clark; as both sought the right-of-way in a canyon big enough for a single set of tracks. Culverwell became "Calientes" after the town was surveyed in 1901. A post office opened and the town was renamed Caliente, and in 1905 the railroad was completed.
