Special Deputy Sheriff badge, Taos County. Worn by Eloy Flores who held that post in the 1930s and 1940s. "Taos" is a Spanish approximation of the Tiwa Indian word "tu-o-ta" meaning "red willow place" or "tua-tah," "down at the village" [Pearce, T.M., 1965].
