Morse brass-frame single-shot carbine, manufactured by Confederate State Military Works, Greenville SC, made on machinery captured from Harper’s Ferry armory. Approx. .50 caliber centerfire, 20” round barrel, serial #683 on bottom of frame in front of trigger guard. The carbine shows old brazed repairs and a period restocking in a light colored wood. The barrel shows a deep brown patina finish with some scattered light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. The frame shows a deep brown patina that matches the barrel well. The stocks are good with some aging, carry, and wear. An original ramrod which screws into matching head in butt is included. There is a screw missing that attaches the bolt to the frame which is easily replaced. The bolt mechanism is serial numbered 683 to match. The bore is very good. The rear sight is original, the front sight is an old period replacement in the original base. Third type. Refer Flayderman 10-044. Only approx. 1,000 were made and estimates of less than 200 extant.
