Mississippian Fertility Effigy Pot AD 1000-1700
Offered in this lot is a Mississippian fertility effigy red clay pot. The origin and history of this pot is unknown; however, it is in the style of miniature pottery items from the Mississippian Period of AD 1000-1700. What makes this vessel so unique is its size. The pot measures 1 1/2" X 1 3/4" across. The pot has a fertility symbol on two sides. Why would the Native Americans make a vessel so small? One theory is that it could have been a type of ritual object. In some Native American cultures in the Midwest, mini pots have been found to be used as prayer items or good luck charms. The pot is in excellent condition for its assumed age of over 300 years.
