For your bidding pleasure is this Mid 1800s Bavarian Folk Art Dowry Chest. This chest shows good craftsmanship and holds to traditional styles from the region of Bavaria folk art. Bavaria a southern state of now Germany; from the Middle Ages up to the beginning of the 19th century Bavaria was a powerful and mighty Dukedom first under the reign of the Guelph dynasty and subsequently under the Wittelsbachs. Traditionally immigrants from this region of the world would stow these iconic pieces of cultural history and bring them to the states as the American dream was idealized during the mid 19th C bringing in immigrants from all over the world. A hope chest, also called dowry chest, cedar chest, trousseau chest or glory box is a piece of furniture traditionally used to collect items such as clothing and household linen, by unmarried young women in anticipation of married life. Traditional decorations adorn this chest shown in folk painted embellishments. This is typically seen in the Scandinavian and German immigrant traditions and follows traditional styles. This chest was Bought in 1970 at Montana antique auction. The measurements of this chest are 47" wide by 21 3/4" deep by 19" tall.
