Madonna of the Steps is the earliest known sculpture by Michelangelo, created when he was only fifteen or sixteen years old. It remained in the Buonarroti family until two years after the master’s death, when it was presented by a nephew, Leonardo, to Duke Cosimo I. Ten years later, Cosimo II returned it to the Buonarroti family. Michelangelo’s genius is evident as a teenager in this, his first masterpiece, whose figures are so f luid that they look as if they were drawn with a pencil and molded in wax. He admired Donatello’s technique of rilievo schiacciato, a form of shallow relief carving requiring delicate chiseling of the marble, both to model the figures as well as create the sense of recession in space. However, it astonishes us that, as a teenager, Michelangelo’s conception of the Madonna and Child would be so different from the depictions of his predecessors.

Total Sales Price
The total sales price of an item includes the hammer price plus a 23% buyer's premium. Framing for unframed artwork, packing, shipping, and insurance is extra.

If a purchase arrives and it is defective or damaged, you will get a full refund or replacement item with a similar value of your choice if the oversight was ours. Prior to returning an item, the customer must obtain a Return Authorization from one of our representatives.
Returns
All sales are final. There are no cancellations, returns or refunds. Under certain circumstances, we may make an exception and allow a cancellation, return or approve a refund. However, in the case of a return, the Buyer's Premium and Shipping Cost will not be refunded.
Payment Due
A seller will contact the Buyer within three (3) days of the completion of the auction. Complete payment is due upon receipt of notification of a successful bid and must be done by the Buyer no later than 7 days after an invoice is received. Title shall pass to the Buyer once payment in full has been made. All shipping charges will be borne by the Buyer. Any item that has not been paid within 7 days after the receipt of the notification may be put back on the auction block for sale. Any buyer that does not make payment will automatically be blocked from future auctions and will be filed with a collection agency and the credit bureau.

Right to refuse sale
We reserve the right to refuse any sale due to unforeseen circumstances including, but not limited to: damage to an item, out of stock listing, misrepresented item, withdrawn consignment, or other such issues. In the event of a refused sale for which payment has already been received, a full refund will be issued equal to the purchase price of the given piece.
