1780-Lot of five 8 reales. Medium condition. HKA#64966

The El Cazador was one of the most prized treasure ships to be located and recovered in the past two decades. Discovered in 1993 by Jerry Murphy in 3000 feet of water 50 miles south of New Orleans, it was financed in part by a friend of Fred Holabird’s. We offer here all of the official El Cazador coins sold at Smythe auction in New York City, October 2007. We purchased virtually all of the bulk coin lots. Each coin was subsequently encapsulated by NGC.
The El Cazador was a Spanish ship sailing from Veracruz, Mexico loaded with approximately 450,000 pesos of silver coin for the Spanish colonies in Louisiana January 11, 1784. With no money in the new Spain of America, Napoleon soon took over the territory and later sold it to The United States under Thomas Jefferson.
The pieces here are offered by denomination, date and relative condition. A high condition coin has boldly visible details, while a low condition coin is easily identifiable, but may have one complete side obliterated by sea water reactions. We offer two reale and eight reale pieces. Two reales is about the size of a quarter, and of similar spending value. Eight reales is about the size of a silver dollar, and is a well known treasure coin, or “piece of eight”.
