Mexican Polychrome Carved Wood Folk Art Mask
This hand-carved and polychromed wooden folk art mask is characteristic of traditional Mexican ceremonial dance regalia. Such masks are frequently utilized in regional festivals and dance dramas, including the Baile de la Conquista (Dance of the Conquest) and the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians). The mask depicts a stylized European male figure, likely a conquistador, featuring a pale complexion with vibrant red cheeks and a high forehead. Notable iconographic details include large green eyes with radiating starburst patterns, arched black eyebrows, and a prominent dark mustache with upturned, curled ends. The figure is framed by long hair composed of multiple horizontal rows of carved ringlets. The reverse of the mask is deeply hollowed and displays rough-hewn tool marks consistent with traditional hand-carving techniques. A metal wire is attached to the back.
