Mexican Guerrero Zompantle Wood Transformation Mask
This ceremonial transformation mask is a work of Mexican folk art from the state of Guerrero, hand-carved from Zompantle wood. The mask incorporates a dual-image design used in traditional regional dances such as the Danza de los Tlacololeros, representing the transformation between human and animal states. The upper portion features a human face with pinkish flesh tones, almond-shaped eyes, and inset animal bristle eyebrows. The lower portion transitions into an animal snout, decorated with yellow and orange polychrome paint and black linear detailing. Inset animal bristles are used for whiskers on the animal face. The construction involves a single block of carved wood with a hollowed reverse. The mask shows physical evidence of ethnographic use, including a weathered reverse and integrated hanging hardware.
