Mexican Folk Art Hand-Carved & Painted Wood Dance Mask with Fish
This hand-carved and polychrome painted wooden dance mask is characteristic of Mexican folk art traditions, particularly those from the Guerrero region. The mask features a humanoid face finished in a vibrant red pigment. It is uniquely adorned with three relief-carved fish: one positioned vertically on the forehead and one situated above each eye, acting as eyebrows. The fish are decorated with black, white, and yellow stripes. The face includes narrow slit apertures for the eyes, painted black and white whiskers on the cheeks, and an open mouth revealing carved teeth. The reverse side shows a dark, naturally aged patina with visible carving marks and a wire hanger attached. Such masks are traditionally used in regional folkloric festivals and maritime-themed ceremonies.
