According to "Defending the Dominion" by Edgecombe, Canadian Militia & Defense acquired 5000 MkIII MH rifles in 1885. Most remained in stores with some issued to Garrison units and training schools, while many remained unissued without even DC markings added. This example shows an 1882 dated receiver, which is consistent with the purchase. Numbered on toe of butt "46" it shows no additional marks beyond those from manufacture. The rifle exhibits signs of very little actual use, with buttplate screws still clearly stamped. Bore is excellent with traces of a grease coating. Action is strong with original aged finish with freckling and brown plum in areas. Barrel finish shows scattered freckling but good color. All stampings are clear and very strong in both wood and metal. Correct sights show serial 2358 at rear. Broken clearing rod in Channel.
