Presented in this lot are two (2) vintage Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) books, "Sketches New and Old",1893, and "Life On The Mississippi", 1901. "Sketches New and Old"with the authentic illustrations by True Williams, is a collection of short stories published first as newspaper articles all with Twain's humorous writing style. Part memoir and part fiction, "Life on the Mississippi" reflects themes of change and progress, both culturally and technologically. Two other strong themes are the power of observation and the value of travel as a learning experience. MARK TWAIN (1835-1910), pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American writer, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer who became one of America's greatest and most popular writers. Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, the state which influenced much of his writing. Twain acquired fame for his travel stories such as Life on the Mississippi (1883), and for his boyhood adventure novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885).
Both classic books are in good overall condition, covers show wear consistent with age and handling, foxing and age tanning noted to intact pages, "Life On The Mississippi" has deckled pages. Respective measurements are 5.5"W x 7.75"L x 1"D, 5.5" x 8.5" x 1.25"D
