Magnificent Original Painting of The Historic Notre Dame Cathedral
During one of Frances most historic timelines of the renaissance leading into the eighteenth century, the nation was obsessed with the adoption and development of classical architecture while rejecting the prominent gothic monument designs which had once been her glory. As the Revolution of 1789 was in full swing, this often brought the infringement, decay, and in extreme cases cataclysmic destruction of cathedrals and churches. However, this wasn’t the end to Frances architectural genius. A renewed interest of the Medieval era and in Gothic monuments came about from the spread of literary trends in the early nineteenth century. Notably, the works and writings of Rene de Chateaubriand and Walter Scott, help to boost the popularity of this once shunned style. With weakened morale following the end of the July Revolution of 1830, France was in desperate need of a feeling of heritage which transcended regime and ruler. Seven months after the Revolution Victor Hugo published a novel called the Notre-dame de Paris. The vivid descriptions of Notre-Dame Cathedral and its Gothic construction style launched Frances adoption of Gothic monuments to become the native architecture of the people. Weakened and patrimony starved, the people of France quickly fell in love with Victors eloquent conviction. The popularity sparked a slew of inspired illustrations by all types of artist. Salon painters, lithographers, book illustrators, caricaturists, and, later, photographers all worked vigorously to illustrate scenes and/or create the cathedral itself. Later, images of the Notre-Dame de Paris were known by all levels of French society. Â
