Lovely & Scarce 1849 $2.50 Mormon Gold. 1849 Deseret Assay Office. Mormon $2.50 Gold. Kagin-1. Rarity-5+. AU-58 NGC. Authorized by Brigham Young and the Mormon Church in Utah and struck by the newly formed Deseret Mint. Warm honey-gold with plenty of luster and a whisper of orange-gold toning at the rims. Serious marks are non-existent to the unaided eye, while a glass provides few marks of note as well. Nicely struck albeit from buckling dies with swelling in the obverse field around the left rim, and with much more prevalent swelling on the reverse. Clasped hands details include full fingers and outlined cuffs, while the reverse all-seeing eye and miter design are well-defined. Weak at the 8 in the date, as nearly always found.
NGC has graded precious few high-grade examples of this rare Mormon quarter eagle issue, and the present coin, though lightly circulated, is near the top of that firm’s Census. An attractive link to the early days of the Mormons in Deseret, today’s Utah, as well as an attractive opportunity to add a rare prize to a growing Pioneer/Territorial gold collection!

This denomination is the third rarest of the Mormon coinage after the $20 and prohibitively rare $10.
Obverse: clasped hands, date 1849 below, G.S.L.C.P.G. and TWO. AND. HALF. DO. around.
Reverse: bishop’s miter and all-seeing eye at center, HOLINESS TO THE LORD around.
Edge: Plain.
Die alignment: 180 degrees.
NGC Census: 2; 4 finer (MS-62 finest).
