Description: Up for auction we have this lot of 3 Southwest pots. One is a Native American pot with a Fred Harvey sticker on bottom. So who was “Fred Harvey” and why was he so important to Native American arts and culture? Fred Harvey [ 1835 – 1901] was a prominent 19th century Native American curios entrepreneur, business man, hotel and restauranteur who fairly singlehandedly established the emerging 20th century American tourist fascination with traveling to the great American southwest and exploring the culture of Native Americans and their legacy of Native arts, jewelry and crafts. Few people today realize the impact the Fred Harvey Company had on Indian arts and crafts. Most people are familiar with the Fred Harvey Company’s involvement with food, lodging, and the Harvey Girls. But few are aware of the Fred Harvey Company’s involvement in the “curio” trade and even more astonishing, the impact on museum collections. The Fred Harvey pot being featured in this art is made by Native Americans and sold in the 1970's at one of the Fred Harvey's stores. This is what's called a tourist pottery. The potor a vessel is in great condition as pictured. It measures 5.5" tall and has a top rim diameter of 1.25". The other pot is made by Papago Indians made by Native Americans in Kitt Peak Arizona. This is a friendship circle pot. It measures about 3.5" tall and has a top rim diameter of 2". The third and the last miniature pot in this lot is a Mata Ortiz Olla jar. The jar is signed on the bottom Claudia Sanchez. It measures about 1.75" tall. Some loss to paint due to age.
