The lot features an early circa 1890-1900’s cast iron medallion from the Lead, South Dakota Fire Department. The medallion is embossed with images of a ladder, axe, helmet, horn and fire hose. The piece is marked "L.F.D." on the front and is marked by the manufacturer on the back "Balchers & West Utica, N.Y.". The medallion has been placed on a beautiful stand and shows good condition. Believed to be a very rare historical piece. Lead, South Dakota was founded in 1876 after the discovery of gold. The city is the home of the famed Homestake Mine, which is the largest and deepest most productive gold mine in the Western Hemisphere before its closing in 2002. The town was founded as a “company tow” by the Homestake Mining Company. The piece came directly from a Homestake Mining Collection in South Dakota. The piece measures 5.75" wide and is 11.75" tall. A similar piece was thought to have sold a few years ago for over $2,000.
