Lakota Sioux Fully Beaded & Feathered Coup Staff
This is an exceptional fully beaded and feathered Warrior Coup Staff from master artist John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians. The piece was handmade by full blood Lakota Sioux Indian John Young Buck (Born 1944-) in the circa late 1900’s to early 2000’s and displayed in a Red Lodge, Montana Ranch. The coup stick or coup staff is a large full size with wood hook curved end and is covered completely showing banded pony and trade seed beadwork, trade clothe, and rawhide wrappings. The club shows beadwork starting at the hook curve and running down almost the entire surface of the coup stick down to the bottom. The coup curve or coup hook shows a red wood stroud wrapping, carved wood end and tanned hide tied on skull (possibly a wolf or coyote) as well as ties holding wound glass padre trade beads in colors of amber, pink, greens, blues and more with several metal hawk bells at the ends, the curve also shows a Buffalo hide section with long hair on. The beadwork on the staff shows various colors of trade seed and pony beads such as chalk white, padre sky blue, blue, red. The center section is wrapped in rawhide and the entire staff shows 11 drops of Turkey feather sections with approximately 19 feathers which are wrapped in red wool stroud trade clothe and further accented with drops of Buffalo hair, horsetail hair, Buffalo vertebrae bone, wound glass padre trade beads, metal hawk bells, drops of red stroud wool trade clothe, and more. The coup curve shows a hide tied section, a traditional attribute. The piece is made in traditional Indian Wars Coup Staff pattern and displays wonderfully. John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux Tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is considered to be one of the finest Native American artist of the late 20th to early 21st Century. The coups staff measures 77.5”L by 14”W (not including the feather drops). Including the feather drops the staff measures 27”W.
