This large, original antique Chinese lacquer painting was gifted by the * Vietnamese to an American man by the name of Brown. It was presented to * Brown for his help in school construction in Vietnam before the war. * <br>The painting depicts a wise Chinese sage showing approval to a * young boy. The man has a long beard and benevolent smile, and holds a * staff with ribbon. The boy looks pleased, gazing upward and holding a * large vase. A red-crowned crane, often a symbol of luck, longevity * and fidelity, stands in the foreground. FOR THE NEXT 7 MONTHS, HE WAS CHAPLAIN FOR A UNIT OF 1000 ARMY CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERS. THEY WERE NOT IN COMBAT, BUT THEY WERE AT THE FRONT LINES OF ANOTHER BATTLE--TO HELP DESTITUTE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE BUILD SCHOOLS. THEY BUILT 3 SCHOOLS IN 6 MONTHS. WHEN CONSTRUCTION WAS FINISHED, THE LOCAL PRIEST HAD A BANQUET. THEY PRESENTED BROWN WITH A CHINESE PAINTING DONE IN 1846. THE PAINTING WAS BROUGHT FROM CHINA TO NORTH VIETNAM AND EVENTUALLY SOUTH VIET NAM TO BE HIDDEN FROM THE COMMUNISTS. THE IMAGES OF AN OLD MAN, A YOUNG CHILD AND A HERON SYMBOLIZING LONG LIFE, PROSPERITY AND HAPPINESS. "I THOUGHT IT WAS A SHAME TO GIVE IT TO ME, IT WAS SO VALUABLE". BROWN SAID. "I WAS SPEECHLESS, FLABBERGASTED. I DIDN'T KNOW THEY HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS. IT WEIGHED 90 POUNDS WHEN IT WAS BUNDLED UP TO BE SHIPPED FROM VIET NAM" A SMALL PLAQUE NEAR THE BOTTOM READS THAT IT CAME FROM YUNAN, CHINA AND WAS GIVEN TO BROWN. THIS VERY FINE ORIGINAL CHINESE ART IS TRULY A TREASURE, PAINTE BY A PROMINENT CHINESE ARTIST!
