These are army records of the Head Quarters of the Second Brigade of the First Division, Department of the Gulf, stationed there beginning in November. The documents included in the folio sized books (10 by 15”) are general orders, time tables, food requisitions, and many, many court records for men who joined the military in Vermont, Maine, and Indiana. The court cases are shocking to read. For desertion, one private got sentenced to hard labor for the rest of his life. For sleeping while on duty another private got two months at hard labor at Fort Jackson, with a 24 pound ball and chain attached to his left ankle, and he had to forfeit 10 dollars a month of his pay for the duration of his sentence. Francis Stillman Nickerson was the commander of the Brigade. Nickerson was born in Maine, and because of his bravery in the battle of Bull Run he was promoted to Colonel and commanded the 14th Maine. His superior was General Benjamin Butler in New Orleans. Butler and his brother, Andrew, do not have a good reputation in New Orleans. Apparently, the Butlers held a monopoly on all grocery and liquor sales in the area. It seems the Butlers made a lot of money off of the Civil War. The second book is an account book showing what people purchased and what they paid for goods. The other items are two loose account paper leafs that kept track of clothing for the enlisted men. The covers are in poor shape, as are the spines. The paper of the two items and first book are in good condition but the second book's pages have yellowed.
