Katharine Hepburn’s certificate of alien registration, number A446760, 3.5 x 4.5, issued on April 17, 1951. Issue date is stamped on the inside front cover, with her name filled in in another hand. Lower portion of inside front cover bears a 1.75 x 2 clipped snapshot, signed underneath by Hepburn, “Katharine Houghton Hepburn.” The following page bears Hepburn’s personal information, filled out in another hand, listing her birth date, occupation, “Film Actress,” residence, and other pertinent information. Five of the following pages bear Alien Registration Office stamps dating from April of 1951 to June of 1952, with several of the stamps listing her address as the Globe Theatre. At the top of the front cover, in pencil, Hepburn writes “I want this back – K.” In fine condition, with some mild toning and staples to front cover, light silvering and a crease to photo, as well as a registration stamp over portion of photo, and mild handling wear.

Marking only the second time that we have offered an item signed with the actress’ full name, this document was issued to Hepburn when she traveled to the United Kingdom for a performance of The Millionaires at London’s New Globe Theatre, alongside Robert Helpmann and Cyril Ritchard. With this “certificate of alien registration,”, Hepburn was free to move about the city...when a suitable break from her acting duties allowed. An important piece from Hepburn’s life—emphasized by her notation of “I want this back”—with a remarkably scarce version of her signature!
