This is an extraordinarily rare authentic original Karl Bodmer hand-colored Aquatint Engraving with Gum Arabic: Tab 20 of the Mandan Indians dating to 1839-1843. The piece is from Karl Bodmer’s (Swiss 1809-1893) Travels in the Interior of North America and shows two Mandan Native American Indians which are hand colored aquatint on an engraving. Bodmer was hired as an artist by German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwiedin to accompany his two-year exploration of the Upper Missouri River and record the images of the many tribes of American Indians.Boder had 81 aquatints made from his work to illustrate Prince Maximilian’s book entitled Maximilian Prince of Wied’s Travels in the Interior of North America being published from 1839-1843. This is a beautiful hand colored aquatint engraving with numerous inscriptions: “Tab 20” in the upper right-hand corner; and below the print “Carl Bodmer pina. ad. nat., and Sih- Chida & Mahchsi- Karehde, Mandan Indianer, Indiens Mandan, Mandan Indians; Coblenz. bei J Holscher; London, published by Ackermann 8C C 96, Strand; Paris, Arthus Bertand, editeur; Hurlimann sc.” This frame is a beautiful hand carved oak with hand carved arrowheads in each corner of the frame in a lovely 19th Century Black Forest hewn style.
