c1902-Lot of 7: they are "Justrite" carbide headlamps of either chrome metal (2) or brass construction (5). There are five different Justrite models. The sizes vary somewhat, and the sides bear the name and the patent dates of each model. One unit has lost its reflector and flame components. Another unit features a Miner`s candlestick blacksmith modified and wrapped around the base to be stuck into timbers or cracks, quite innovative by the former owner. All units have adjustable flame ratchets on the top water chamber, and spark wheels inside the reflectors. The screw-off carbide bases feature different castings to facilitate grip for turning. The reaction between calcium carbide (CaC2) and water (H2O) produced acetylene gas, a clean burning white flame of 4-6 lumens. Battery lamps came into favor in 1918, effectively phasing out the carbide units. A nice lot of mining history. HKA#64392
