TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, December 5, 1962. Letter to Mrs. Marshall Smith, in full: "It was indeed a pleasure to receive your recent letter. Thank you so very much for the congratulations. I am so glad that you liked 'Travels with Charley.' As for the state of Montana, I found the country to be one of indescribable beauty. Thank you again for taking the time to write." In fine condition, with mild edge toning an a few small stains at the top.

Travels with Charley: In Search of America was Steinbeck's humorous travelogue documenting a 1960 trip he took with his French poodle, Charley, across the United States in a specially made camper—a trip encompassing nearly 10,000 miles. Witnessed by this correspondence, Big Sky Country was among his many stops. Taken by the "indescribable beauty" identified on this page, Steinbeck further praised the land in his 1962 book: 'I'm in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection. But with Montana it is love.'
