Career United States Army officer (1827–1896) who fought in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars; Gibbon's division bore the brunt of Pickett's Charge on July 3rd during the Battle of Gettysburg. Civil War-dated autograph endorsement, signed "John Gibbon, Maj. Genl. Vols., Comdg.," one page, 3.25 x 7.75, February 26, 1865. Written while stationed at the headquarters of the 24th Corps, the Union Army of the James, Gen. Gibbon recommends the promotion of Lemuel B. Norton. In full: "I cheerfully join in the recommendation for promotion of Capt. Norton whom I believe to be a capable efficient officer." Signed at the conclusion by Gibbon. Captain Lemuel B. Norton was Chief Signal Officer for the Army of the Potomac during the Battle of Gettysburg. In very good to fine condition, with tape stains to the edges, and loss to the upper right corner tip.
