Jim Cathcart (1888-1940) Silver Mounted Spurs
Featured in this lot is this Jim Cathcart (1888-1940) silver mounted spurs. The spurs show an early example of a wonderfully decorated and etched heel band and long drop shank with the strap lags mounted with copper buttons. Jim Cathcart was born in Kansas and then worked as a ranch hand in Nevada, where he was a participant in the Elko Rodeo put on by G.S. Garcia. Cathcart eventually moved to Oregon as a homesteader. Throughout his time in Nevada and Oregon, he made a side job of making bits and spurs for himself and friends. His items, when marked, are stamped with “JC”. His work is heavily influenced by the items produced in the Garcia shop; he made use of the foliated leaf pattern, as well as popular designs like the Santa Barbara bit. The condition of this pair of spurs is good for their age, with heavy oxidation and patina consistent with their age. The measurements of this pair of spurs are 5 3/4" x 4" x 1 1/2".
