Jewelry Gold Ore slab, 1.93 troy oz. Quartz breccia with native gold filling interstices. The Golden Chariot Mine was discovered in February 1871 by John Valentine King and four other prospectors. The first shipment of ore averaged about 60 ounces of gold per ton with following shipments averaging between 10 and 20 ounces per ton. King and his partners sold the mine, the richest in the Julian-Banner District in 1873. By 1875 the richest ore was mined out. This specimen of free lacy gold in quartz is an example of the showy ore mined by King and his partners between 1871 and 1873. This cut slab of early Golden Chariot ore is from the estate of Lucy Bell King Lane (1875-1967), John King's daughter. Measures 2.75" x 2" x 0.25". - Woodward Collection -59045
