The town of Eureka was first settled in 1864 by silver prospectors from the nearby Austin settlement when they discovered silver-lead ore in Prospect Peak. The town and population boomed as mining fueled the local economy. In 1877, as the population was approaching 10,000, the Jackson Hotel was built. The hotel still stands and attracts visitors today. This 9.75” by 8” photograph was taken in 1890, and features almost 50 people including a band. The photo is damaged along 3 corners and bears several holes, brown spots, and tears. - Jacobitz Collection -59948
