Iran Pahlavi Dynasty Presentation Mint Sets,
<B>Pahlavi Dynasty Presentation Mint Sets,</B></I> starting around 1960AD, the Bank Markazi Iran began issuing mint sets of the current year's coinage. Although recently listed in the SCWC, these sets are rarely seen in the marketplace. This accumulation was purchased in the early 1980's (Henry Christensen auction.) The first style utilized for the mint sets was a thick beige cardboard with four circular cut-outs for the 1, 2, 5 and 10 Rials. The coins are secured by strips of clear plastic. KM-MS1 is for coins dated 1342SH (1963), and this group includes a total of eight MS1 sets. Also featured is a previously unknown set with the 1, 2 and 5 Rials dated 1341 and the 10 Riyals of 1339. The second format features five denominations, adding the 50 Dinars, and packaged in rectangular strips covered with plastic. This lot has two KM-MS3 1348SH and one KM-MS4 1350SH. The third style comprises the six denominations in a dark blue wallet with the bank's logo on the front in gold, and this lot includes five KM-MS5 1353SH, six KM-MS6 1354SH and eleven KM-MS7 dated MS2535, the very scarce one-year types celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pahlavi rule, KM1156a and KM1205-1209. KM-MS7 has a catalog value of $21.50 as a SET, but the combined catalog values of the individual types is $85! Mint sets from this era for other countries such as Japan have risen dramatically in value as the number of collectors increased along with the level of sophistication. The total retail/catalog value for this group of 34 mint sets is estimated at $1400, figuring the 2535MS set at $85 each. Many of the coins have an oily residue from the plastic which should be removed (with acetone.)
