Antique Travel & Tourism posters will be the major attraction at PosterConnection’s 15th sale of original poster art from the 1880s to the 1980s. Of special local interest is a selection of 32 posters related to San Francisco, California and the Western USA. Several 1950s images present the Golden Gate Bridge in all its glory; others focus on different landmarks, incl. the City’s cable cars, its beaches and Chinatown. The most affordable California posters start at prices as low as $180. A 1933 poster for Southern Pacific by Maurice Logan for the beautiful Lake Tahoe region is expected to sell for $1,000. The favorite in this section is a rare poster for Southern Pacific’s new Daylight train from 1937: it is expected to fetch at least $1,800.

The sale also includes many other railroad, airline, ocean liner and general travel posters from around the globe. Among them are Picasso’s famous “Cote d’Azur” from 1962 which will be offered for a mere $500, a small poster for the famous Normandie from 1932 ($450) and an exceptional Graf Zeppelin poster from the mid-1930s which is expected to sell in the $2,000 - $2,500 range. A selection of sports posters includes works related to early auto-racing, swimming, horse racing, soccer, tennis and the Olympic Games.

Some 200 posters are related to product advertising, the arts and the movies. The posters include turn-of-the-century rarities by famous posterists such as Jules Cheret (Saxoleine), Alphonse Mucha (Job) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (La revue blanche) as well as ‘modern classics’ by Leonetto Cappiello (Contratto Canelli), Charles Chambers (Chesterfield) and Niklaus Stoecklin (Meta). But the highlights of the sale can be found in the Hollywood movie selection. A poster for the 1934 film The Scarlet Empress starring Marlene Dietrich is expected to sell for $5,000 - $7,000. A rare German Frankenstein poster from 1956 has a low opening bid of $1,200. A potential auction surprise: the (perhaps) only known copy of the German one-sheet poster for the infamous movie The Outlaw starring Jane Russel. The U.S. six-sheet version recently sold for over $70,000 at auction – this German poster has a very moderate reserve of $900.
