Sangameshwar, Silver Rupee, 11.42g, in the name of Farrukhsiyar, AH (11)28/ RY 5. Very fine+, exceedingly rare.
Sangameshwar was an important inland harbour on the Konkan Coast of Maharashtra. A mint was first operated here during the Adil Shahi period and a charter to strike Larins, issued to two goldsmiths has been published but no Adil Shahi Larins are yet known. Rupees and Larins struck in the name of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb have been known and they are extremely rare. The mint appears to have been revived around 1717, as evident from this coin, against the backdrop of power struggle between Chhatrapati Shahu and Rani Tarabai in the region. Sangameshwar was in all probability controlled by the Angre’s during this time, and it is likely that the coin was struck under the authority of great Maratha Naval Chief Kanhoji Angre who emerged as a partisan of Chhatrapati Shahu. Historically very important coin. Exceedingly rare.
