This lot includes five photos (four signed) of music personalities from Hollywood's Golden Age. Included are Bing Crosby, Buddy and Vilma Ebsen, bandleaders Jimmy Dorsey & Kay Kyser and singer/actress Carmine Miranda. Carmen Miranda (1909-1955), known as "the Brazilian Bombshell", was a superstar in that country by 1928. Invited to New York to appear in a Broadway show, she arrived in the U.S. with her band, the Bando da Lua, in 1939. Miranda, was the highest-paid entertainer in the U.S. for several years during the 1940s, sold over 10 million copies of her records worldwide, and made 14 films between 1940-1953. Buddy Ebsen (1908-2003) started out as a dance act with his sister Vilma, later starred in films of the 1930s. He was later a sidekick to Western heroes Rex Allen and Fess Parker, he also played serious character roles, as in Night People (1955). Ebsen's greatest success came on TV, however, where he starred on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962-1971) and Barnaby Jones (1973-1980). James Francis "Jimmy Dorsey (1904-1957) and brother Thomas Francis "Tommy Dorsey, Jr (1905-1956) formed their first band, Dorsey's Novelty Six, in 1920. In 1927, their orchestra, which featured Tommy on trombone, became The Dorsey Brothers Orchestra; its members included Glenn Miller and Bob Crosby. In 1935, Tommy quit after a disagreement with his brother and formed a band of his own from the remnants of Joe Haymes' orchestra. Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby (1904-1977) won the 1944 Academy Award for Best Actor in Going My Way. He was also nominated for Best Actor for The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) and The Country Girl (1954). Known for his relaxed "crooning" style of singing, Crosby recorded more than 1,600 songs that sold at least 500 million copies. His 1942 single of "White Christmas" sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and was the best-selling single in any music category for more than 50 years. Kay Kyser (1905-1985), who couldn't read a note of music, was one of the most popular bandleaders and music personalities in America from 1933 until the end of the 1940s. Kyser and his band became nationally known following a series of radio broadcasts from the Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. Signatures and inscriptions are clear.
