Herbert Ryman, Preliminary Study for New Orleans Square. 1964, 30 in. x 15 in., oil on illustration board. “I made many trips to New Orleans with Walt and Lilly,” Herbert Ryman remembered, “when we were developing the concept for Disneyland, because Walt began to realize that it could really be something.” And from such research trips, this exceptional, early oil painting was produced, of architecture and activity, as artist study. Note, even a Disneyland-style trashcan has been placed along pavement, to test effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only known oil produced for the project.
