Item/Description: Rare Henry Varnum Poor (American, 1887-1970) vintage glazed pottery plates, featuring a rustic, earthy arts and crafts style with a light, sandy-colored glaze and hand-painted designs in dark blue and black. Left plate appears to depict a turnip or other root vegetable, with circular and organic shapes, and a thin dark line around the rim. Right plate depicts a prominent plant design, likely a turnip or gourd, with a stem and leaves with a thick, dark band around the rim. Signed 'HP 65' in paint on front of plates, and 'HP 65' signed into pottery on verso. Also marked 'PW 3E' in paint on verso.

Henry Varnum Poor (1887–1970) was a prominent American artist, known for his work as a painter, muralist, potter, and architect. He was a leading figure in the American Studio Crafts Movement after initially gaining recognition as one of the first American studio potters, producing distinctive hand-thrown earthenware, often decorated with sgraffito and metallic oxide glazes. His ceramics are held in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.

During World War II, Poor served as the head of the War Art Unit of the Corps of Engineers, documenting the war effort in Alaska. He taught at Columbia University and, with three other artists, founded the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine in 1946, where he taught for many years. His papers are preserved in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.
