<B>Harry Truman Typed Letter Signed</B></I> in full as president. One page, 7" x 8.75", on White House stationary, Washington, May 8, 1952. Harry S. Truman (1884 -1972) was the thirty-third president of the United States (1945-1953); as vice president, he succeeded to the office upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The letter was written to John Roy Steelman (1900- 1999) Truman's first assistant from 1946 to 1953. The office later became the White House chief of staff. Steelman holds the record for the longest term as chief of staff at six years. Truman was thanking Steelman and the staff for the birthday gift of <I>A History of American Life</B></I> by Arthur M.
