About the Artist: Georges Laratte, was born in Cap-Haitien, Haiti on April 23, 1933. Larratte learned pottery at an early age. He received most of his education and professional training in Cap Haitian. He took art courses at the Foundation Vincent in 1957, specializing in Ceramics. In order to pay for his education, he worked as a tailor, barber and accountant. In 1958, he moved to Port-au-Prince. In the early 1960?s, he turned to wood sculpture and consolidated his style. He devoted himself to wood sculpture until 1973.
January 1, 1973, marked the beginning of Laratte?s fascination with stone. On that night, he had a dream. A voice commanded him to pick up rocks along the riverbeds and seashore and free the spirits imprisoned in them. Since this dream, Laratte has worked exclusively with stones.
