Gordon Highlanders Tailor Made Vest W/ Trews
For your consideration, a Gordon Highlander Westcott tailor made wool vest and a pair of tartan wool trews (the name for Scottish Tartan trousers), circa 1900. The linen lined vest has three brass buttons in front, lapels, and a buckle in the back for adjustment; it is, of course in Gordon Highlander Red. The brass buttons bear the regiment's insignia and the Jennens & Co., London backmark (name of the button maker). The buckle on the back is stamped, "Brithish". There are no other tags or markings on the garment. The wool tartan trews feature a traditional high waist and are dark blue and green with red and yellow overstripes. It is not entirely clear what clan or regiment this tartan represents, though it is quite close to the tartan for the 79th British Regiment, the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. The trews have no markings, save for what is stamped on the many(18 in all!) buttons; In addition to a button-fly front closure, there are buttons for securing suspenders, as well as buttons on the insides of the ankle seams (purpose unknown). The buttons are each stamped with one of two button maker names. Most are stamped, "R. Fraser & Sons * Inverness"; Two of the seven buttons at the ankle are stamped, "MacDougall & Co. * Inverness & London". The vest and the trews are both in excellent condition. The vest measures 14" across the shoulders and 22 1/2" from the neck to the front belt line. The trews have an approximate 25" waist x 25" inseam.
