GREAT BRITAIN: George II, 1727-1760, AE medal (34.42g), 1758, Eimer-662; Betts-416, 44mm, The British Victories of 1758, armored and laureated George II bust left // Britannia in cart drawn by lion trampling French lilies flanked by Justice and Liberty; names of victorious commanders around, names of their victories closer to the edge with the American triumphs of Louisbourg, Forts Frontenac and Duquesne prominently placed at the right, some reverse porosity, EF. During the summer of 1758, British and colonial forces captured the fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, which marked a turning point in the Seven Years' War (the French and Indian War). Louisbourg was a strategically important stronghold that provided a safe harbor for the French navy and protected access to the St. Lawrence River, which was the outlet for the Great Lakes into the Atlantic Ocean and the critical waterway connecting the colonies of New France to the outside world.
