This is an exceptionally rare circa 1890 French tufted leather Chesterfield sofa. The distinctive design of a Chesterfield Sofa is something that has been a popular style choice of people around the world for hundreds of years. The Chesterfield sofa, one of the most recognizable furniture pieces in the world. The term “Chesterfield” was first used in the 1800s, it is said that the style was originally commissioned by Lord Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, from whom the sofa got its name. The sofa shows intricate deep buttoning and a low seat, upholstered in quality leather which allowed gentlemen to sit comfortably upright and not wrinkle their clothing. This stunning Chesterfield sofa has a cognac colored high quality genuine leather, scroll arm design and deep button tufting and nail-head trim. The arm rests are the same depth as the back rest providing a deep and relaxed sitting position. The Chesterfield sofa or couch has complimented the American Western design and brings a warm sophisticated feel to the ranch interior. These 19th century sofas show a wonderful condition due to their superb frame construction and quality cushioning. Provenance: Purchased directly from France for $12,000 over 20 years ago where it was used in the collector’s residence in the village of Mougins, France home to Picasso and located a few miles from Cannes, the piece was later sent to the owners ranch in Madison County Montana. The seat shows some cracking and wear from over 100 years of age and use, but overall is in good condition and can be refurbished. The measurements of this sofa are 82" x 28 1/2" x 35" .
