Clarke, Hermann Frederick.JOHN HULL: A BUILDER OF THE BAY COLONY. Portland: Southworth-Anthoensen Press, 1940. First edition. Small 4to, original brown cloth, gilt; top page edges gilt. xiv, 221, (3) pages; fine frontispiece; 15 fine plates, including one depicting twenty New England, Willow Tree, Oak Tree and Pine Tree coins. Spine a little spotted, else fine. One of only 500 copies printed, many of which apparently went to institutional libraries. An entire chapter (pages 53-67) is devoted to Hull’s coining activities, and a later chapter details the marriage of Hannah Hull, recounting “the tale about the dowry being her weight in Pine Tree shillings.” The plates in this first edition are considerably superior to those in the reprint.
