This provides a transition from European pictorialist landscapes to American ones. Archer served in the U.S. army in France in WWI, when this elegiac study was made, using the evocative elements of a ruin, trees, a deserted road. Archer continued his career as a California pictorialist. In 1939/40 he developed the Zone System with Ansel Adams. 13 1/8" x 10" matte print on mount, titled and signed on the mount, recto, with exhibition stamps on the verso. ¼" of the edge is slightly raised from the thickness of the mounting paste.
