English Hand-Painted Earthenware Puzzle Jug, Dated 1827
This English hand-painted earthenware puzzle jug, frequently associated with the Bristol region, is dated 1827. The vessel features a bulbous body rising to a double-walled neck with intricate pierced lattice-work decoration. A hollow loop handle is connected to a hollow rim, designed to transport liquid to three projecting spouts modeled as stylized animal heads and one additional circular spout. The body is hand-painted in vibrant polychrome enamels with lush floral sprays, including prominent pink roses and purple and yellow tulips. The front center bears a hand-painted calligraphic monogram HC above the date 1827 in a dark sepia tone. The rim and foot are finished with a scalloped dark reddish-brown border. The underside of the base features three adhesive labels: a silver and black Rubin Collection sticker, a white Skinner auction house label with the numbers 2850 and 293, and a rectangular yellow inventory label.
